Position: Executive Director, Gateway Concierge

The Organization:

Gateway for Cancer Research seeks to create a world in which a cancer diagnosis is no longer feared. To that end we fund Phase I and Phase ll clinical trials, investing in research that has the greatest potential to change practice. Gateway invests 99 cents of every dollar raised from the public in next generation, patient-centric cancer research to drive transformational advances in cancer treatment.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Executive Director of Gateway Concierge will lead Gateway’s new major gift program that connects the philanthropic resources of high-net-worth donors seeking to make a difference in the fight against cancer to world-class clinician-scientists who can deliver practice-changing results. The successful candidate will draw on extensive experience as a major gift fundraiser and deep knowledge of cancer research/clinical care to grow the Concierge program and achieve Gateway’s overall fundraising objectives.  He/she will meet revenue goals by aggressively upgrading existing Gateway donors to Concierge-level gifts and by marketing Gateway Concierge to prospective donors currently outside of the Gateway network.  The Executive Director will be expected to close at least six Concierge gifts of $250,000 or more (including a minimum of two from new donors to the organization) within the first year while simultaneously positioning the program for steady growth in Year Two and beyond.


  • Responsible for providing strategic direction and day-to-day management of Gateway Concierge
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward high-net-worth prospects for gifts of $250,000+
  • Develop and execute strategies/tactics for donor lead generation to aggressively grow prospect pool
  • Coordinate Concierge fundraising activity of Chief Development Officer and President
  • Leverage Moves Management to actively manage pipeline and convert prospects to donors
  • Identify research interests of Concierge donors and initiate research program development
  • Coordinate efficient hand-off of nascent Concierge research programs to Gateway’s Research and Grants team and provide support for ongoing program management
  • Percent effort: frontline fundraising = 60%; management of CDO and president fundraising activities = 20%; research program development and coordination with Research and Grants team = 20% 

Experience and Skills

  • 10+ years of major gift fundraising experience in an oncology setting required
  • Demonstrable work history of successfully closing six- and seven-figure gifts from individual and institutional donors required
  • Extensive knowledge of cancer research and clinical care; sophisticated lay understanding of cancer science, including basic, translational and clinical research; familiarity with leading figures and institutions in cancer research and care
  • Extensive understanding of developing trends in philanthropy and knowledge of innovative fundraising practices in cancer research/clinical care
  • Demonstrable experience marketing philanthropic programs to generate leads, cultivate and convert prospects
  • Extensive knowledge of biopharmaceutical industry and cancer-oriented charitable organizations
  • Extensive experience and facility with fundraising management platforms

Year One Key Deliverables

First Quarter

  • Establish collegial and productive working relationship with Gateway colleagues
  • Become familiar with Gateway’s various policies, procedures and Stakeholder obligations
  • Become familiar with Gateway’s funding history, grantmaking program/SOPs and funded investigators
  • Hold introductory meetings with all members of Gateway’s board of directors and other key advocates for the organization
  • Assess and prioritize current Concierge prospect pool
  • Review and refine Concierge on- and offline marketing strategies and related material/collateral
  • In collaboration with Chief Operating Officer, activate strategies/tactics to market the Concierge value proposition to prospects outside of Gateway’s current network
  • Carry-out 25-30 substantive moves per month (scheduled phone calls, face-to-face/virtual meetings) with key constituents

Second Quarter

  • Initiate cultivation and solicitation of high-priority Concierge prospects within Gateway’s network, engaging and deploying CDO and President as appropriate
  • Execute marketing strategies/tactics to engage prospects outside of Gateway’s existing network
  • Carry-out 30-40 substantive moves per month and a minimum of five solicitations in the quarter

 Third Quarter

  • Carry-out 30-40 substantive moves per month and a minimum of eight solicitations in the quarter

Fourth Quarter

  • Carry out 30-40 substantive moves per month and a minimum of 10 solicitations in the quarter
  • Meet goal of six Concierge gift closings of at $250,000 each by the completion of 12 months of service
